recognize (to know and remember someone or something because you have seen or heard them before): I didn’t recognize Jane in her new outfit. Do you recognize this place?
identify (to recognize someone or something and say or prove who or what they are): She was able to identify the man who robbed her. Can you identify your suitcase among this lot?
know (to be familiar with): Do you know him? I know this business inside out.
pick out (to recognize someone or something in a group): She has long white hair, and it’s easy to pick her out in a crowd.
place (to recognize someone or remember where you have seen them in the past): He looks familiar, but I can’t quite place him.
discern (to see or recognize something that is not very clear): The telescope can discern distant objects. We could clearly discern a figure in the dark.
